Of all of the gaming platforms, PC has the most extensive library of games, standing above any console.
However, while most PC gamers like using a keyboard and mouse when gaming, many others also prefer to use a controller (like an Xbox controller) to play their games.
The Xbox One controller is one of the most popular options for PC gaming.
Several games have inbuilt controller options designed specifically for Xbox controllers, facilitating the transition from keyboard to controller.
Different Ways to Connect an Xbox Controller to Your PC
There are three different ways that you can use to connect an Xbox One controller to your Windows PC.
The most common method is using a USB cable for its lowest input latency compared to the other methods. It’s perfect for gamers that want the quickest response times.
If you prefer avoiding cable clutter, use it through Bluetooth. However, if your computer doesn’t support it, the Xbox wireless adapter is an excellent backup option.
Connecting Your Xbox Controller to PC Using USB Cable
Before getting into the steps of this section, we would like to point out that the cable is different depending on the version of your controller.
Older Xbox One controllers use a micro-USB cable, whereas the newer controllers like the Xbox Series X and Xbox Elite Series 2 use a USB-C cable instead.
- Find the correct cable for your controller and plug it into your PC.
- With the controller connected, press the large Xbox button to turn it on so Windows can detect it.
- Windows will then install all the necessary drives to make your controller ready.
Connecting Your Xbox Controller to PC Using Bluetooth
Before following the steps, you must check if your Xbox controller supports Bluetooth.
Unfortunately, original Xbox One controllers do not support Bluetooth. However, if you’re using an Xbox Series S/X, you’re ready to go.
- Press the Windows button on your taskbar, then look for the Settings cog and click it.
- On the new window, click on Devices.
- Click on the toggle button to turn Bluetooth on.
- Press the Xbox button on the controller to turn it on.
- Press and hold the pairing button found on top of the controller for three seconds until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Right-click the Bluetooth icon that showed up on your system tray.
- Then click the Add a Bluetooth Device option to open the Bluetooth menu.
- Click Add Bluetooth or other device in the new window and select Bluetooth.
- Click the Wireless Controller and wait until the Xbox button stops flashing. Windows should now say that your controller is connected.
Connecting Your Xbox Controller to PC With a USB Adapter
The Xbox wireless adapter is an optional accessory that can be used as an alternative to connect your controller without using a cable. Setting it up is easy and can be done in four simple steps.
- Connect the adapter to a free USB port on your computer. The adapter uses a USB-A type connector, compatible with most modern computers.
- Press and hold the Xbox button until the controller turns on.
- Once the controller is on, hold the sync button on top of the controller until the Xbox button begins flashing.
- Hold the sync button on the Xbox wireless adapter located on the side or top for a few seconds.
If everything was done correctly, the Xbox button on your controller should stop flashing and go back to its solid color to display that it’s been paired with the PC.
Playing on Your New Controller
After correctly following all the steps above for your chosen method, you’re all ready to go. If you want to remap the controller buttons, use the game’s options to do so.
So boot up your favorite game and start playing with your new Xbox controller.
